ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Wide receivers coach Wells leaves Lobos to join staff at Utah State
Call it a hemorrhaging, call it a makeover. But another assistant coach is bolting from the Mike Locksley regime of University New Mexico football.
This time it’s Matt Wells, who is leaving his job as UNM receivers coach to be quarterbacks coach at Utah State, his alma mater, both schools said Tuesday.
Wells is the fourth assistant to leave or be moved from the staff of Locksley, who is 2-22 in his two seasons at UNM. When athletic director Paul Krebs recently announced that Locksley would be back for a third season, the head coach vowed there would be changes in his staff.
So far, in addition to Wells, both coordinators (Darrell Dickey on offense, Doug Mallory on defense) have left — Dickey was dismissed, Mallory landed softly at Indiana. Centers-offensive guards coach Mike Degory also was not retained.
George Barlow is getting a promotion from UNM secondary coach to defensive coordinator.
