6:05am — The Count Goes On

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Wilson leads Madrid by about 1,400 but the jury's still out.

The last batch of hand-tallied ballots will go up about 3 p.m. today, Bernalillo County election officials are telling reporters.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Heather Wilson has widened her lead over Democratic challenger Patricia Madrid slightly overnight, with 102,376 votes to Madrid's 100,981 in the latest unofficial count, according to The Associated Press.

That's with 462 of the 1st Congressional District's 465 precincts reporting.

About 4,500 machine-rejected ballots have been tallied but now need to be keyed in by election workers, KOAT-TV is reporting from the election warehouse this morning.

Only then, as the official county canvass begins, will some 3,700 "in lieu of" and provisional ballots will be counted.

County Clerk Mary Herrera is telling reporters that final results won't be available before Friday.
