Maldonado Fights Tonight

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque lightweight boxer Fidel Maldonado Jr. risks his unbeaten record (9-0, eight KOs) tonight at Club Nokia in Los Angeles against Puerto Rico’s Jorge Cordero.

Actually, it doesn’t appear to be much of a risk; Cordero (4-6) has lost his last six bouts. All four of his victories came by knockout, so that does suggest the hard-punching Maldonado should exercise some care.

One hopes the Albuquerquean’s expected victory isn’t as painful as that of Cordero’s last opponent. Against unbeaten Hylon Williams Jr., on March 25 in Las Vegas, Nev., Cordero was disqualified for repeated low blows. New Mexico’s Russell Mora, who has become one of the sport’s most sought-after referees, did the DQ-ing.

Tonight’s card is scheduled to be televised at 9 p.m. on some of Fox Sports Net’s multiple feeds. Check your cable/satellite guide for its availability on your system. Note that Maldonado’s bout may or may not make the telecast.
