Volcano Vista No. 1 Seed in Softball

Carlsbad Seeded Second in Class 5A

When Volcano Vista softball coach Cheryl Johnson saw the playoff bracket for the Class 5A state tournament, there was at least one benefit.

“I don’t have to go out and scout,” she said.

The Hawks (22-2) got the No. 1 seed in 5A, and their road to a potential title-game appearance is littered with familiar faces.

All three of Volcano Vista’s district rivals in 1-5A — Rio Rancho, Cibola and Cleveland — were placed in the top half of the bracket with the Hawks, as were a couple of other teams they’ve already met and beat: Valley and Eldorado.

The Hawks, who open with No. 16 West Mesa, went 12-0 against the teams in their half of the bracket.

The Eagles, the District 2-5A champs, open with No. 13 Cleveland.

The Cavegirls had been ranked No. 1, ahead of Volcano Vista, but were seeded No. 2. They will open against No. 15 Sandia.

District 5-5A champ Albuquerque High was given a No. 6 seed, and the Bulldogs open with 11th-seeded Mayfield. That winner takes on No. 3 Las Cruces or No. 14 La Cueva in the quarterfinals.

CLASS 4A: Piedra Vista is a dominant No. 1 seed; the Panthers are the only team to beat Volcano Vista this year.

Varsity newcomer Atrisco Heritage Academy got into the field as a No. 15 seed, and opens against No. 2 Artesia.

CLASS 3A/1A-2A: Sandia Prep got a No. 2 seed in 3A, behind Silver. The Sundevils open with Ruidoso. In 1A-2A, Southeastern rivals Jal and Loving are the top two seeds.

FORMAT: The first round is single elimination. It’s double elimination from there on out. The 5A and 4A championships are Saturday at Lobo Field. The 3A and 1A-2A finals are at Cleveland.
