Lobo football: Calvin Smith Leaving

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Defensive tackle Calvin Smith has asked for and will receive a release from his scholarship agreement, University of New Mexico football coach Mike Locksley said on Friday.

Locksley said Smith, a sophomore-to-be from Hialeah, Fla.,  expressed a desire to attend college closer to his home.

Smith, recruited out of Hialeah High School by Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and several other Bowl Championship Series-conference schools, was the highest-profile player to have signed with New Mexico under Locksley. But he was a backup last season as a true freshman, making only 13 tackles, and did not move to the top of the depth chart during last month’s spring practice.
