ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — On Aug. 31, 2003, Katie Hnida made college football history by successfully kicking two extra points for the New Mexico Lobos against Texas State — thus becoming the first woman to score a point in a Division I game. The previous Christmas Day, Hnida had become the first woman to appear in a D-I game — attempting a PAT for the Lobos against UCLA in the 2002 Las Vegas Bowl. That kick was blocked.
Next year, it appears, LSU soccer player Mo Isom might become the second woman to appear and score a point in a D-I football game. Who knows? She might even score more than Hnida’s two career points.
Still, New Mexico’s Hnida will always be the first.
