SANTA FE — A bipartisan proposal to establish an independent commission that would redraw congressional and legislative districts after the census is moving forward in the state House.

The legislation, House Bill 211, passed the State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee on Monday without dissent. It must pass one more committee before reaching the full House for consideration.

“Fair and independent redistricting is something we can all agree on, which is pretty rare in Santa Fe,” Rep. Rebecca Dow, R-Truth or Consequences, said in a written statement.

The commission would deliver proposed maps to the Legislature for Congress, the state House and state Senate, and the Public Education Commission.

“It’s past time for a fair and transparent redistricting process in our state. All New Mexicans, regardless of party affiliation, should be secure in knowing that their voices will be heard and represented equally, and I believe this bill does that,” Rep. Natalie Figueroa, D-Albuquerque, said.

Dow and Figueroa are co-sponsoring the bill, along with Rep. Kelly Fajardo, R-Los Lunas; Rep. Joy Garratt, D-Albuquerque; and Rep. Georgene Louis, D-Albuquerque.
