ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — La Cueva, Volcano Vista girls take most honors in their bracket
Eldorado and La Cueva were New Mexico’s two best boys soccer teams during the 2011 season. Thus, the Eagles and Bears received much love in the coaches’ all-state voting.
Four players from Eldorado — led by brothers Corey and Brad Carabajal — and three from La Cueva were named to Class 5A’s first team.
Brad Carabajal, a senior midfielder, was chosen 5A player of the year as the Eagles last month won the state championship. Corey is a sophomore forward.
Eldorado’s Walt Witkowski was 5A coach of the year.
Volcano Vista and La Cueva dominated the first team in 5A girls.
The state champion Bears put four on the squad, led by senior forward Dee Johnson. Amber Ashcraft of La Cueva was coach of the year.
Volcano Vista had five first-teamers, including sisters Emma and Hannah Fenske, plus the player of the year, senior forward Ashley Williams, who led 5A in scoring.
In 4A, Belen’s dynamic senior forward, Ricardo Perez-Contreras, was an easy choice for player of the year. He scored 52 goals this season, a state record, and helped the Eagles into the state championship game in 2010 and 2011.
Class 4A girls state champion Albuquerque Academy had four players on the first team, including senior forward Caroline Growney and junior forward Mackenzie Miller.
Senior midfielder Ben Brennan of Sandia Prep was the boys’ Class 3A/1A player of the year as the Sundevils won a state title.
Erika Nelson from Hope Christian, a senior midfielder, was the player of the year in 3A/1A girls soccer.
The all-state lists can be seen today on D4.
