Lobo Recruiting Haul at Eight

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Three From Calif. Added Tuesday

University of New Mexico women’s soccer coach Kit Vela announced the balance of the school’s eight-player recruiting class for 2012, which includes two local All-State players, four from California, and one each from Colorado and Texas.

The class includes a pair of Volcano Vista seniors, midfielder Alyssa Coonrod and defender Olivia Ferrier. They helped the Hawks to the 2010 Class 5A state championship and a close miss last fall.

Those two, as well as midfielder Dylann O’Connor of West Hills, Calif., and midfielder/defender Annie Wheeler of Arlington, Texas, were all reported by UNM and by the Journal last week.

Others coming to UNM announced Tuesday are midfielder/defender Tera Trujillo of Granada, Calif.; midfielder/forward Katie Hinman of Mission Viejo, Calif.; midfielder/forward Lindsay Guice of Fort Collins, Colo.; and midfielder/defender Katelyn Almeida of Sierra Madre, Calif.

Almeida and Trujillo were teammates at CIF champion Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, where they also played alongside current Lobo Sinead Fleming. Former Lobo forward Hannah Hand also played at FSHA.

Last week, the Journal also reported that Lauren Shull of St. Pius and Ruth Bruciaga of Volcano Vista had committed to New Mexico. But they aren’t among the eight who signed a national letter of intent, a UNM official said Tuesday night.

New Mexico has won back-to-back Mountain West Conference championships and berths in the NCAA College Cup. Vela has completed her 11th season at UNM.
