Eldorado tops Manzano

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — No. 5 ELDORADO 69, No. 13 MANZANO 54: Junior guard Cullen Neal scored a game-high 20 points, including a burst of long 3-pointers in the second quarter that gave the Eagles a nice cushion, as Eldorado (20-8) rolled into the semifinals against No. 8 Clovis.
The game was tied at 11 after one quarter. Neal, Class 5A’s leading scorer and his school’s all-time leading scorer, buried four treys in the first four minutes of the second quarter, on four tries. The last of the four left Manzano (16-12) in a 27-13 hole, a deficit too much to overcome.
Although the Monarchs did close to within 34-31 early in the third quarter, Eldorado had a key three-point play from Neal to keep Manzano at arm’s length.
Leading 39-35, the Eagles went on an 11-0 run, which began late in the third and carried over into the fourth quarter, to effectively end Manzano’s chances.
Eldorado went 3-0 against its District 5-5A rival this season. One of the Eagles’ losses came in January, at home to Clovis.
Zach Lee added 17 for Eldorado, including several spectacular dunks. Jarrell Harper, Quavshaun Branch and Cristian Lucero each had 10 for the Monarchs.
