Injury to Knuckle Sidelines Bregman

Rehab Process To Last 3-6 Months

One thing you are about to see much less of this season are baseball scouts at Albuquerque Academy games.

Alex Bregman is done for the year.

The Chargers’ stellar senior shortstop broke the middle finger on his right hand Monday afternoon prior to a game with Manzano, and X-rays Monday night revealed a break.

He will have surgery today, with a rehab of three to six months.

“I’ll be fine. I’ll be good to go after surgery,” Bregman said Tuesday.

He said a ground ball took a bad hop on the lip where the grass meets the dirt at Academy’s field. He put his hand up to shield his face.

“It hit me right on the top of my middle finger,” Bregman said.

Bregman hoped it was just jammed. He went 2-for-4 in the Chargers’ win over Manzano in the first round of the Albuquerque Metro Championships.

“It just broke,” Bregman said. The injury is to the top knuckle.

And while he said he may eventually do some pinch-running for Academy later in the season, he won’t be swinging any bats.

“I don’t think so,” Bregman said. “We’ll see if the doc can work miracles.”

Bregman had played in six games for Academy.

“It’s disappointing,” he said.

Bregman, who has signed with LSU, is expected to be a top choice in June’s amateur draft.

“I’m not worried about it at all,” he said. “The teams have seen me play through the circuit last year. I’m focused on LSU, but we’ll see what happens in June.”

Metro 2nd Round

Marvin Ortiz gave Sandia five shutout innings and Taylor Duree struck out the side in the seventh for a save as the fifth-seeded Matadors edged No. 4 Rio Grande 2-1 on Tuesday in the metro quarterfinals.

David Gunther suicide-squeezed home a run in the top of the third for Sandia, scoring Josh Gonzales who had doubled down the left-field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. In the fifth, Gunther beat out an infield single with two outs, then scored on Derek Blaisuis’ RBI double to left on the next pitch.

Sandia visits No. 1 La Cueva at 4 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals. The Bears downed No. 9 Atrisco Heritage 15-6.

No. 3 Eldorado is at No. 2 Volcano Vista in the other 4 p.m. semi Thursday. The Hawks defeated No. 7 St. Pius 9-4, while the Eagles outscored No. 6 Academy 16-9.
