Messina Update and More

To the surprise of no one, including himself, former Lobo star linebacker Carmen Messina was not selected in the 2012 NFL draft.

Nor was it a surprise, however, to read this tweet from Messina just minutes after the draft was concluded:

“Looks like I’m headed for Detroit. 8 mile, here I come.”

The latter is a reference to a well-known road in the Detroit area.

Later on Saturday, the Detroit Free Press confirmed Messina’s signing with the Lions as a free agent.

Meanwhile, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported that  former Lobos defensive end Jaymar Latchison has signed, or will sign, with the Packers as a free agent. And former Lobos safety Bubba Forrest told the Carlsbad Current-Argus, his hometown newspaper, that he will sign with the Cincinnati Bengals,

In an earlier interview with the Journal, Messina said whoever signed him was  getting a player who’ll do everything possible to make their roster.

“No matter what, I’m just gonna continue to work out and give it my all,” he said. “I’m not gonna give up on my dreams; I’m gonna continue to chase after them.”

Messina’s chances to be drafted might have disappeared with a sub-par performance in the 40-yard dash at Northwestern University’s pro day in March. Messina lives in suburban Chicago.

He ran a time of 4.85, almost two-tenths of a second slower than he’d run before his senior year at UNM.

“I think my nerves just got to me with all 32 (NFL teams) there with their stopwatches and stuff,” he said. “… But all it takes is one team to like me and one team to sign me, so I can just go out there and prove I can play in this league.”
