Friday: The ’Topes picked up a pair of wins over New Orleans at Isotopes Park, rallying for a 7-5 victory in a suspended game, then dominating the regularly scheduled contest 8-4 in front of 8,016 fans.
Scott Van Slyke, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Josh Fields homered as Albuquerque rallied to win a game suspended because of rain Thursday night. New Orleans led 2-0 when the game was stopped in the fifth and promptly made it 3-0 when it resumed. But Matt Angle’s RBI single and Van Slyke’s three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth sparked a comeback that made a winner of reliever Derrick Loop (6-2). Josh Wall pitched the ninth for his 16th save.
John Ely (8-4) was dominant for six-plus innings of Game 2, allowing one run on three hits, striking out six and retiring 11 straight batters at one point. Luis Cruz smacked a two-run homer in the third, and the Isotopes plated four runs in the sixth to lead 8-1. Ely tired in the seventh, allowing home runs to Donnie Murphy and Chris Aguila before Angel Guzman came on to get the final two outs. The game was limited to seven innings to accommodate the suspended contest.
