ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — City Golf Fee Hikes Start Next Week
Albuquerque’s municipal golf course fee increases begin Monday. The rate hikes, which are across the board, were endorsed by the Golf Advisory Board in June.
“Following a detailed and comprehensive citywide public golf cost of service analysis, it has been determined that in order to create a solvent enterprise fund for public golf, a fee increase is necessary,” said Barbara Baca, director of City Parks and Recreation.
The increases affect Arroyo del Oso, Los Altos, Ladera and Puerto del Sol.
Taos High Golf Is Back in the Swing
After a one-year absence, Taos High recently resurrected its golf program.
The Taos Country Club is working with the student golfers, allowing them to play in exchange for picking up range balls every Wednesday.
“With the interest (from students) and support from the club, it didn’t seem reasonable not to have it anymore,” school athletic director Nickie McCarty told the Taos News. “I’m excited to get it back again. We want to give the kids experience, and golf is a lifelong sport.”
TCC assistant golf pro Carville Bourg recently participated in a golf marathon to raise money for the high school program. He played 100 holes in one day, which took him about eight hours, and he raised $2,500. Half of the money raised went to the Sun Country Junior Golf Foundation and the rest went to Taos Junior Golf.
Estrada Wins His 1st Summer Major
Belen’s Alex Estrada picked up his first major win of the summer, edging out Albuquerque’s Patrick Beyhan as the two were in the hunt yet again.
Estrada, a recent University of New Mexico graduate, beat UTEP golfer Devin Miertschin of El Paso in sudden death for the New Mexico-West Texas Amateur on Sunday in Las Cruces.
Beyhan, who won the Sun Country Match Play and Albuquerque Men’s City Amateur this summer, tied for third. Beyhan played for Western New Mexico the past two years and is transferring to New Mexico State.
