Four of the five Albuquerque prep volleyball teams in action Monday night in the quarterfinals of the state volleyball tournament advanced to the next round.
In Class 4A, No. 2 seed Albuquerque Academy easily swept No. 7 Gallup, while in Moriarty, No. 4 seed Hope Christian swept No. 5 Portales. The top seed, Goddard, beat No. 8 seed Valley in three sets.
Class 3A’s No. 2 seed, Sandia Prep, needed only three sets to defeat seventh-seeded Dexter in Estancia.
In Class 1A, No. 2 seed Evangel Christian/Oak Grove Classical Academy — whose players voted to play No. 7 Mountainair on the road just so families and fans could watch them — beat Mountainair in four sets.
The co-op squad will face No. 3 seed Gateway Christian (from Roswell) on Tuesday — also in Mountainair — in the semifinals.
The 5A quarterfinals are Tuesday, including No. 3 seed La Cueva at home against sixth-seeded Las Cruces, No. 5 Cleveland visiting No. 4 Piedra Vista, and seventh-seeded Albuquerque High traveling to No. 2 Centennial.
