ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Bill Harvey, golf pro, is holding his own with the pro golfers.
The teaching pro at Arroyo del Oso shot a 5-under 65 on Tuesday, grabbing a share of the first-round lead with four others in the New Mexico Open at Santa Ana Golf Club.
Harvey, 51, Ryan Dillon, Tony Finau and former UNM golfers Wil Collins and Madalitso Muthiya are two shots clear of another quintet at 3-under.
“I had a great pairing,” Harvey said, referring to playing partners Dillon and Fergal Rafferty, who shot 70. “There was a lot of chatter in the group the whole day, because they’re both sports enthusiasts too. We were talking football and baseball playoffs, and it made for a relaxing round.”
Among the other notables, former Lobo Alex Estrada, making his professional debut, is at 2-under. Four-time PGA Tour winner Notah Begay III is in a group of nine tied for 32nd at 1-over.
Play continues today with the second of three rounds at the Tamaya Cheena course.
