Run for the Zoo to go virtual again

Run for the Zoo organizers say they will “Roar On” this year with its second straight virtual event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants can find registration information at for the 1 mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon or full marathon that can be done anywhere at any time May 2-9. Races can be completed by walk, run, bike, or skate; indoors or outdoors, while maintaining social distance and other COVID-safe practices. In addition to registration fees, donations are also accepted.

Money raised from the event goes to the New Mexico BioPark Society, the nonprofit support organization for the ABQ BioPark Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Garden and Tingley Beach. Last year, “over $100,000” was raised, and this year’s goal is to raise $125,000.

“While we regret not being able to run with you in person again this year, we’re encouraged and excited that your love for Run for the Zoo extends across the globe,” a message on the Run for the Zoo website reads. “Just like the lion, whose roar is a symbol of strength, your support is our strength, and you are part of our Pride. Together, we will ‘Roar On’ and create a future that is safe and strong.”

Albuquerque Journal and its reporters are committed to telling the stories of our community.
