ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Police say a man fatally harmed himself late Thursday night as officers were dispatched to his Northeast Albuquerque home.
Gilbert Gallegos, an Albuquerque police spokesman, said the incident is being investigated as an in custody death by the Multi-Agency Task Force. He did not say if the man was handcuffed or detained by officers at any point.
Gallegos said police responded sometime before midnight to reports of a man trying to “harm himself” in the 1100 block of Chelwood Park NE, north of Lomas.
“Officers arrived on scene and observed a male armed with a knife and suffering from multiple wounds,” Gallegos said.
He said the man was taken to the hospital and died from his injuries.
“The Multi-Agency Task Force is on scene conducting interviews and canvassing the area,” Gallegos said.
It is the second in custody death this month.
On April 5, Danny White, 43, died while being arrested by officers in Northwest Albuquerque. Police have said White “suffered a medical episode.”
