Lobos, Kansas To Play in 2013-14

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The UNM Lobos continue trying to bolster their nonconference basketball schedule and national profile.

The university on Wednesday confirmed the team will play perennial national power Kansas Jayhawks in the 2013-14 season.

A request to speak with UNM head coach Steve Alford about the deal was declined by UNM sports information director Frank Mercogliano on Wednesday. On Thursday, UNM confirmed that the game will be played in Kansas City, Mo., and the agreement does not include a clause for a return visit from the Jayhawks to play a future game in the Pit.

Details on TV broadcast rights to the game have not been released.

While the Lobos in recent years have been criticized for nonconference schedules that do little to bolster their strength of schedule rating, a metric that grows in importance come March when teams are selected to play in the NCAA Tournament, the 2012-13 season is one of the program’s most challenging nonconference slates ever.

While this season’s nonconference schedule has its share of strong programs, the Kansas game already guarantees the Lobos a more high-profile opponent than any already on this season’s schedule.

There isn’t much history between the programs. The two teams split a pair of games in 1963 and 1964, each winning on its home court.

Alford and Kansas head coach Bill Self coached against each other four times during their respective stints in the Big Ten – Alford at Iowa and Self at Illinois. Between the 2000-01 and 2002-03 seasons, the coach’s programs went 2-2 against each other.
