UNM baseball picks up series at Washington

The University of New Mexico baseball team will return to action Friday when it opens a three-game series at the University of Washington. The series was added this week.

Coach Ray Birmingham said the Lobos (8-14) and Huskies (15-17) will play single games Friday through Sunday in Seattle. UNM’s scheduled game at Texas Tech next week will be pushed back a day to Wednesday.

UNM and Washington had openings this weekend because of COVID-19 issues in their opponents’ programs. The Lobos’ scheduled home series against UNLV and the Huskies’ series against visiting Stanford were canceled.

“Our kids need to play, so we were trying to find something,” Birmingham said. “After UNLV was canceled, (UNM assistant coach) Jon Coyne got on the phone and set things up with Washington. We’re excited about it.”

UNM has not played since April 3 because of coronavirus protocols. The Lobos had one player test positive after a road trip to San Diego State and ensuing series against San Jose State and at Nevada were canceled. UNM returned to practice Sunday.
