ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Linked to here is a take from former Journal sports writer Chris Tomasson, who covers the Miami Heat for foxsports.com, on San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich’s decision not to play four of his starters — including big names Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili — against the Heat in Miami Thursday night, and NBA Commissioner David Stern’s heated reaction.
To me, it’s easy to see both points of view. On one hand, the Spurs’ recent schedule is ridiculous. On the other, a ticket holder for that game has every right to feel cheated.
Bottom line? I’ll side with Popovich. Pro basketball is entertainment and a business, but it’s also a sport. Over a grueling, 82-game schedule — not including the playoffs or preseason — I believe the coach has a right to rest his players as he deems advisable.
