A longtime Albuquerque teacher accused of sexually abusing two of his second grade students is now facing charges related to a third student from a separate school.
Danny Aldaz, 45, a former second grade teacher at Valle Vista and Helen Cordero elementary schools, is charged with three counts of criminal sexual penetration and eight counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor related to the abuse of a second grade girl at Helen Cordero in 2013 and 2014.
Aldaz was already charged in February with multiple counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and criminal sexual penetration of a minor while in a position of authority in the abuse of two second graders from Valle Vista.
A judge denied a pretrial detention motion to keep Aldaz behind bars in both cases, citing in the most recent that Aldaz has complied with his conditions of release – including no contact with minors and GPS monitoring. An attorney for Aldaz could not be reached.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court:
A woman who formerly worked with Aldaz told deputies she was talking on speakerphone about the allegations against him when her daughter, who overheard, became “visibly upset” and said Aldaz had abused her as well.
The girl told detectives Aldaz sexually abused her multiple times when he was her second grade teacher. She said she would often stay in the restroom to get out of class and escape the abuse.
The girl told detectives that when the abuse was occurring, Aldaz would tell her not to say anything or they would get in trouble. She said she “knew she should have told sooner” but “felt she had done something wrong because she let it happen.”
The girl told detectives she was worried about it happening to other kids.
Albuquerque Public Schools officials have said Aldaz was put on leave “immediately” when the district found out about the BCSO investigation in early January 2020.
Aldaz started with APS as a substitute teacher in 2004 and went on to work at Edward Gonzales Elementary School and Helen Cordero Elementary School.
Aldaz also formerly taught children at Blissful Spirits yoga studio since 2015, where he won best Kids Class in Albuquerque the Magazine in 2017.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is still seeking any additional victims of Aldaz and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
