ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Here’s a cautionary note for San Diego State fans regarding Rocky Long’s hiring of his old friend Bob Toledo as the Aztecs’ offensive coordinator: in 2006, when Toledo held that position at New Mexico, the Lobos scored all of six points in a season-opening loss to Football Championship Subdivision opponent Portland State.

Am I saying Toledo doesn’t know his stuff? No, I definitely am not saying that. But a look at UNM’s 2006 season (the only year Toledo held the job) suggests his scheme takes a while to be successfully implemented.

Still, if there’s a wait involved,  it could be worth it. That season, the Lobos averaged 16.7 points over the first six games of the regular season. In the second six games, they averaged 28.7.

After the 2006 season, Toledo left to take the head coaching job at Tulane.
