The University of New Mexico men’s tennis team will take on No. 8-seeded Texas A&M in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. in College Station, Texas, the Lobos learned on Monday.
This is UNM’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since taking on Oklahoma State in College Station in 2015.
Oklahoma and Denver will battle in the other match at 10 a.m. The winner of the pod will advance to the round of 16 in Florida on May 20.
“Why not us?” UNM coach Ben Dunbar said in a release when asked about UNM’s chances. “We have a lot of momentum. We were 6-1 in conference, we won the championship again. We’ve crossed the finish line plenty this year and the ones that we didn’t, we were extremely close against a lot of ranked teams. We are excited to represent New Mexico on the national stage.”
The Lobos went 8-9 overall and 6-1 in the Mountain West, winning their second straight conference title. The Lobos also swept the 2021 postseason awards, winning Coach of the Year for Dunbar and Player of the Year for Raul Dobai. Texas A&M went 16-8 overall and 7-5 in the SEC.
