Spring sports roundup: New Mexico State wins WAC softball title

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — New Mexico State (29-19, 14-4) bashed four home runs, two by senior Nikki Butler, to win 9-3 over Cal Baptist (21-30-1, 8-10) Saturday and clinch the Western Athletic Conference regular season title. On the final day of the regular season, the Aggies got help when Seattle University fell 4-2 at Grand Canyon.

NMSU next plays on Friday at the WAC tournament in Seattle against an opponent to be determined.

  • At Lobo Softball Field, Rachael Hathoot went 4-for-5, with two doubles, a two-run home run and five RBIs as New Mexico split a doubleheader with San José State, losing 13-5 before winning 10-2. The Lobos (7-35, 6-14) and Spartans (9-19, 5-15) close out the series on Sunday at noon with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.

BASEBALL: At Air Force Academy, Colo., New Mexico (9-22, 6-14 Mountain West) fell twice to Air Force (19-18, 11-12), 6-4 and 15-12, and has lost seven straight heading into Sunday’s 11 a.m. series finale.

Justin Armbruester pitched UNM to a 2-1 lead through five innings of the opener, but Air Force rallied for four sixth-inning runs. Lobos Mack Chambers, Kyler Castillo and Jack Silverman homered in the nightcap, but the Falcons outhit UNM 19-16.

  •  In Orem, Utah, New Mexico State (19-26, 16-15 WAC) split a doubleheader with Utah Valley (8-37, 6-25), losing 4-2 before winning 10-7. Aggie infielder Ethan Mann drove in five runs, raised his WAC-leading RBI total to 56, and has homered in three of the last four games.
