CATCHES OF THE WEEK
Antonio Brito of Albuquerque caught and released a 34-inch carp at Escondida Lake earlier this month. A small fishing rod was attached to it.
Jared Blaschke of Albuquerque caught and released a 19-pound northern pike on the Rio Grande on Saturday. He was fly fishing and using a bunny bug.
AROUND THE STATE
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing at both SUNRISE and TURTLE lakes has been very good with bag limits being reported and sizes ranging from half a pound and up. A full stocking of trout took place at both lakes on Monday with another planned stocking soon. Best baits are salmon eggs, Zeke’s bait, white, green and pink PowerBait. SANDIA LAKES: The Lakes were stocked to capacity with a full load of rainbow trout on Tuesday. We will be receiving another full load over the weekend and will continue weekly stockings as weather improves. Sizes range from 10 to 16 inches on average, with larger 18-inch and over fish mixed in. Anglers have been reporting excellent catch rates on all bait types. Call 505-771-5190 for more information. TINGLEY BEACH: Trout Fishing in the Children’s and Central ponds has been very good using wax worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs. Some anglers are reporting catching trout limits in less than one hour. Fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was fair using zebra midges, leeches, red annelids, spinners and Pistol Petes. Joe Martinelli, curator
NOTES from GAME & FISH: Monday morning water flow on the ANIMAS RIVER at Aztec was 215cfs. Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, streamers, leeches and red annelids.
At MANZANO LAKE, trout fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon egg/corn combinations and garlic scented homemade dough bait.
Water flow on the JEMEZ RIVER as of Monday morning was 24cfs. We had no reports from the Jemez but there was some good trout fishing on the CEBOLLA. Anglers did well using salmon eggs and bright green PowerBait.
Trout fishing on the ALBUQUERQUE-AREA DRAINS was good for anglers using salmon eggs, PowerBait, wax worms, assorted small bead head nymphs and egg patterns.
What ice remains at BLUEWATER LAKE this week is unsafe for fishing but there is some open water access for bank fishing. However, the boat ramp remains closed. Fishing was slow for all species. For updated conditions contact the Bluewater State Park office at 505-876-2391.
Monday morning water flows on the CHAMA RIVER below El Vado and Abiquiu were 155cfs and 55cfs respectively. Trout fishing below Abiquiu was slow to fair using copper John Barrs, worms and PowerBait.
Water flow on the SAN JUAN RIVER below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 345cfs. Fishing in the quality water section was good using olive and black streamers, egg patterns, red larva, red annelids, Griffith’s gnats, and olive, black and brown leeches. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using salmon eggs, worms and small spoons.
Fishing at NAVAJO LAKE was slow for all species and fishing pressure was very light.
Ice thickness at EAGLE NEST LAKE over the weekend was reported at about 24 inches. Fishing was very good using ice jigs tipped with worms or wax worms for perch. Trout fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and homemade dough bait.
There is currently a large section of SANTA CRUZ LAKE open to bank fishing. Anglers fishing over the past weekend reported conditions as slow.
The west-side main boat ramp at CABALLO LAKE has reopened and is expected to remain open as the water level is rising. The east-side ramp remains closed. Fishing pressure was extremely light this past week and fishing was reported as slow for all species.
Fishing at ELEPHANT BUTTE was slow with just a few white bass and crappies reported. Best baits were grubs, shiners and slab spoons. The Rock Canyon ramp has reopened.
Trout fishing at ESCONDIDA LAKE was fair using salmon eggs, PowerBait and homemade dough bait.
