Singles and doubles competition will be staged today and Thursday at the Jerry Cline Complex (I-25 and Louisiana), with the team tournaments scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Jerry Cline, Albuquerque Academy and the Sierra Vista courts in Taylor Ranch.

BOYS SINGLES: The boys Class 5A singles title should be one of the most hotly contested tournaments of the week. The top three seeds — Sandia’s Shepard Moore, La Cueva’s Michael Tran and Eldorado’s Sean Baklini — are district rivals in 2-5A.

Baklini defeated Moore in last year’s state final.

Academy’s George Cooper is the defending champ in 4A, and seeded No. 1 this week.

Jose Gonzales of New Mexico Military Institute is seeded at the top of the Class 1A-3A tournament. He finished second last year to teammate Frederico Sanchez, who is this year’s No. 2 seed in singles.

GIRLS SINGLES: Chloe Lee of Albuquerque High (5A) and Melissa Pick of Academy (4A) are looking to repeat as singles champions this week.

Eldorado’s Susan Baklini, who lost in the finals last year to Lee, is the No. 2 seed behind Lee.

For the second straight year, Paris Corley of Grants is seeded No. 2 in 4A; she lost a three-setter to Pick last May.

Paloma Gomez of St. Michael’s as the No. 1 seed in Class 1A-3A singles. She was the state runner-up last year as the No. 2 seed behind this year’s No. 2, defending champ Juliana Guerin of Robertson.

BOYS TEAM: NMMI, Academy and Sandia have the No. 1 seeds in the team competition.

NMMI and Academy won state last year; Carlsbad took the 5A tournament.

The Chargers have one of the most impressive dynasties in all of New Mexico high school team sports — they have won 10 straight state championships.

GIRLS TEAM: Bosque School, Farmington and Mayfield are No. 1s for the girls.

Sandia Prep, which lost a 5-4 match to the Bobcats last week, is No. 2 in Class 1A-3A.

Mayfield and Farmington hoisted blue trophies last year, while St. Michael’s is the defending champion in 1A-3A. Farmington has won the past four state titles in 4A.
