YUMA, Ariz. — An inmate at the state prison in Yuma has died of an apparent suicide.
The Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry announced Wednesday that David S. Crawford, 62, had died. The agency said that prison staff found him hanging in a shower on Monday and he was pronounced dead after lifesaving efforts proved futile.
State records show Crawford had been serving a 9-year sentence imposed in 2015 for a dangerous drug violation that happened in Maricopa County. He had served two previous prison terms in the 2000s for drug offenses.
State records show eight inmates have died of suicide between July 1, 2020 and April 30, the most recent month with available counts. In the previous fiscal year, five inmates died of suicide and in the 2019 budget year seven perished from self-inflicted injuries.
The agency said it will partner with the county medical examiner to investigate Crawford’s death.
