FRESNO, Calif. – Pitcher Josh Walker worked 8â…” strong innings to help 13th-ranked New Mexico to a 7-3 victory over Nevada in a second-round Mountain West Conference baseball tournament game Thursday night at Fresno State’s Pete Beiden Field.
Walker (11-0) scattered seven hits and struck out four before leaving with two runners on in the ninth. Gabe Aguilar got the final out for the top-seeded Lobos (36-18), who will face No. 2 seed UNLV tonight at 8. The Rebels beat No. 3 San Diego State 6-3 on Thursday.
The fifth-seeded Wolf Pack (25-31) got rolling early when Hugo Hernandez hit a two-run homer off Walker in the top of the first. The Lobos answered in the bottom half with Mitch Garver’s two-run double.
The rest of UNM’s scoring came on long balls. Sam Haggerty hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the second. Luke Campbell added a two-run blast to make it a 6-2 game in the third. Campbell went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.

After Nevada closed to 6-3 in the sixth, D.J. Peterson’s homer in the seventh rebuilt UNM’s lead. League officials estimated the homer to have traveled nearly 500 feet. It was Peterson’s 17th home run of the season.
