ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — July 19 show to be televised by AXS
Allanna Jones of Ionia, Mich., is Holly Holm’s opponent for the Albuquerquean’s July 19 MMA fight in Houston, it was announced Friday.
Holm, 3-0 as an MMA fighter, will be making her debut with Legacy Fighting Championship.
In April, she announced her retirement from boxing in order to focus on MMA. She signed a four-fight contract with LFC last month.
LFC 21, Arena Theater, Houston: Angel Herta vs. Matt Hobar; Holly Holm vs. Allanna Jones; 11 other fights. TV: AXS
Jones is 2-2 as a professional after compiling a 6-2 record as an amateur, according to sherdog.com.
Holm has fought as a bantamweight (135 pounds) as an MMA fighter.
Leonard Garcia, Holm’s longtime Jackson-Winkeljohn Mixed Martial Arts teammate, also is scheduled to make his LFC debut on the July 19 card. Garcia (15-11-1), a featherweight (145) from Plainview, Texas, is matched against Houston’s Rey Trujillo (14-10).
The July 19 card is scheduled to be telecast on AXS-TV (channel 340 on DirecTV, 167 on DISH Network, unavailable on Comcast).
FOX SPORTS 1: Four Albuquerque-based MMA fighters have bouts scheduled in August on Fox’s new all-sports network.
Heavyweight Travis Browne (14-1-1) of Honolulu and Brazilian featherweight Diego Brandao are scheduled to fight Aug. 17 in Boston. Fox Sports 1 makes its debut that day. Browne is matched with the Netherlands’ Alistair Overeem (36-12). As previously reported, Brandao (18-7) is scheduled to face Houston’s Daniel Pineda (18-9). Browne and Brandao train at Jackson-Winkeljohn.
Albuquerque welterweight (170) Carlos Condit and his Jackson-Winkeljohn teammate, lightweight (155) Donald Cerrone, have bouts scheduled on Fox Sports 1 on Aug. 28.
Condit (28-7) is scheduled for a rematch with Denmark’s Martin Kampmann (20-6), who defeated the Albuquerquean by split decision in April 2009. Cerrone (20-5), from Broomfield, Colo., will face Brazil’s Rafael dos Anjos (19-6).
MALDONADO UPDATE: Albuquerque boxer Fidel Maldonado Jr. (15-2-1) tweeted that he made weight Friday for his eight-round junior welterweight (140-pound) bout tonight against Abraham Alvarez Osuna (16-3-1, seven KOs) in Villahermosa, Mexico.
This is basically a stay-busy fight for Maldonado, who was to have fought Luís Ramos Jr. (23-1, 10 KOs) in a far more meaningful bout June 7. Ramos withdrew for unspecified personal reasons, according to his management.
Alvarez Osuna’s record is less impressive than it appears on paper. The Mexican fighter has lost his last two fights and has beaten no one of note.
Jorge Romero (24-5, 21 KOs), who was knocked out by Maldonado in the third round four months ago, is fighting tonight’s main event. He’ll face Mexican countryman Roberto Ortiz (28-0-1, 22 KOs) in a 12-rounder for the WBC Silver junior welterweight title.
The card will be telecast on Fox Deportes (425 DirecTV, 855 DISH, 603 Comcast in Spanish-language packages), starting at 10 p.m. It is unknown whether Maldonado’s fight will make the telecast.
