Sunday: Iowa, the second-worst road team in the Pacific Coast League, earned a split of a four-game series with an 8-5 win over Albuquerque before a crowd of 5,804 at Isotopes Park.
The Isotopes fell one game behind Round Rock in the PCL’s American South.
The first six I-Cubs reached base in the pivotal seventh. Anthony Giansanti’s two-RBI single off Geison Aguasviva (4-4) gave Iowa a 3-2 lead; Ty Wright greeted Topes’ reliever Gregory Infante with another two-run single. The Cubs sent 12 batters to the plate to overcome a 2-1 lead.
In fact, it was 2-1 after the first inning. Donnie Murphy homered for the Cubs, while Matt Angle had a two-run blast for Albuquerque. But the Isotopes’ offense cooled. After leadoff single in the second by Justin Sellers, they didn’t get another hit until Dee Gordon’s two-out single in the seventh.
Albuquerque cut the deficit to 8-5 with three runs in the eighth, highlighted by Alex Castellanos’ solo home run. It was his team-leading 12th.
RHP Peter Moylan finished the game for Albuquerque pitchers firing a perfect ninth striking out the side.
Guillermo Moscoso (5-5, 4.63) collected the win for Iowa going six innings allowing two runs in the first.
This and that: Nashville is in town for a three-game series starting tonight. Then the Isotopes travel to Iowa for four just ahead of the All-Star break.
