Now it does not take “rocket science” to figure out that it now means one must make 3 birdies to make up for the double. So when you make two doubles before you make a birdie … well, that is a recipe for a crummy round. That was me today.
Played some good holes as I handled the three long par 4’s with pars, but did not putt well when the birdie opportunities were there. On number 6 at 550 and downhill, I smashed a 340 yard tee ball and kept it in the fairway, with only a 4 hybrid left to the pin; however still could only manage a par.
My companions in the round managed a 72, Jeff Freeman; and 78 from Roy Vucinich.
The crowds were extraordinary and they are expecting more than 150,000 spectators for the 4 rounds of the tournament, very impressive.
On the telecast the greens look awful, but they are putting very nicely, though not very fast, for the difficulty of the greens complexes.
7:10 tomorrow morning! Maureen and I are early to bed and early to rise. My 2nd round will be in the books by the time everyone reads this piece. To everyone back at beautiful San Juan Country Club, Maureen and I say hello and thanks for all the positive energy!
