SANTA FE — A temporary art installation in Santa Fe commemorates the New Mexicans lost to COVID-19 with paper butterflies intended to represent renewal and rebirth.

The Butterfly Memorial — installed by the Interfaith Leadership Alliance of Santa Fe — includes more than 4,000 paper butterflies to represent each COVID-19 victim. It was originally set up at the Roundhouse but is now on display in the railyard district, through Thursday.

The butterflies were created by students, hospice patients and others.

The state’s official coronavirus-related death toll stands at 4,302 residents.
