Under the black-and-white big-top tent, is a magical yet macabre world.

Cirque Italia has created “Paranormal Cirque” – a traveling show that will stop in Albuquerque on Thursday, June 17, through June 27 at Cottonwood Mall.

Cirque Italia was founded in Italy in 2012 and has been traveling a water circus show, which features acrobats doing stunts in water.

Sarah Kessler, Cirque Italia public relations and media representative, says the show opened in June 2018 in Palmetto, Florida.

“The whole show has a Halloween-ish feel to it,” Kessler says. “There’s comedy as well.”

Kessler says the show is not for the faint of heart because of the death-defying performances and horror stories.

The artists are selected from around the world, and the show features 12 to 15 performers. The crew is about 50 people to bring the magic to the masses, Kessler says.

The show includes the Wheel of Death, mystifying MAGIC, and the silk aerial work.

There are also monstrous creatures with hidden talents.

“Because of the content, there is an age restriction,” Kessler says. Ages 13-17 are allowed with a guardian.

“There is a pre-show, and the whole front tent area is a graveyard,” she says. “There is face painting and a maze to go through. All the performers are running around and intermingling.”

The performance in Albuquerque will be put on by the Black Unit – which follows the company’s strict animal-free policy.

She says Cirque Italia is enforcing all recommendations set forth by the CDC and local municipalities.

“The safety of our guests and employees are of the utmost importance to us,” she says. “Every member of the Cirque Italia family is committed to the health and wellness of our fans. As such, we have made certain adjustments and accommodations in order to comply with the safety guidelines set forth by local and state officials.”

The adjustments include:

• Restricted seating capacity.

• Socially distanced seating with visual cues throughout tent.

• Mask mandate for anyone over 3 years old (available for purchase if needed).

• Increased number of hand sanitization stations in and around tent.

• All common areas wiped down and disinfected every 10-15 minutes.
