Suspected medical episodes led to 2 fatal crashes in ABQ

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque police say two drivers appear to have suffered medical episodes before crashing and being found dead in their vehicles in separate incidents Friday.

Rebecca Atkins, a police spokeswoman, said speed wasn’t a factor in either crash, which both involved men in their late 60s.

Police responded to the first incident around 6 a.m. near Lomas and Girard NE and found a man dead inside an SUV. Atkins said the man had driven on to the sidewalk and ran over two traffic signs.

Afterward, around 1:30 p.m., police responded to a crash in the 3800 block of Academy Parkway NE, near Osuna and Jefferson.

Atkins said the driver had crashed into some bushes just off the street.

In each case, Atkins said, drug or alcohol use is unknown and pending the results of the toxicology report from the autopsies.
