In Uncasville, Connecticut, Albuquerque-based MMA light heavyweight Christian Edwards defeated Simon Biyong by unanimous decision Friday on a Bellator card at Mohegan Sun Arena. All three official scorecards read 30-27.
Edwards, who trains at Jackson-Wink MMA, is now 5-0. Biyong, of Genova, Italy, drops to 7-2.
A minute into the first round, Edwards slipped while attempting a takedown and wound up on his back for the next minute. But after getting back to his feet, Edwards landed a knee to the face that obviously stunned Biyong and knocked out his mouthpiece.
Biyong got a few seconds reprieve while his mouthpiece was rinsed and replaced, but Edwards dominated not only the rest of the round but the rest of the fight, all waged in standup, with punches and the occasional kick. Biyong offered little in return.
“I just wanted to show off my striking a little bit,” Edwards said in the cage after the fight. “… I knew that the ground game wasn’t my best option.”
UFC WEIGH-IN: In Las Vegas, Nevada, Moriarty MMA fighter Tim Means (31-12-1) weighed in on Friday at 170.5 pounds, a half-pound over the welterweight limit as permitted for non-title fights, for his fight Saturday against Denmark’s Nicolas Dalby (19-3-1). The Danish fighter weighed in at 170 pounds.
The Means-Dalby fight is on the main card of a UFC Fight Night event at UFC Apex, to be streamed on espn+ starting at 2 p.m.
