Court upholds convictions in 2009 Roswell murders

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico’s highest court has upheld the murder convictions of a Roswell man for the 2009 shooting deaths of his girlfriend and another man.

The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday there was sufficient evidence to support Aaron Daugherty’s convictions of first-degree murder for killing Valerie York and Mark Koenig.

The court also said a district court judge properly sentenced Daugherty to two consecutive life imprisonment terms rather than concurrent sentences.

Daugherty must serve at least 60 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.

The court said Daugherty became angry after seeing his girlfriend kissing Koenig outside a mobile home and he suspected the victims had engaged in sexual relations. Daugherty retrieved a gun, drove back to Koenig’s home and shot each of the victims twice.
