APD: Man found with severe head trauma on Central

Albuquerque homicide detectives have launched an investigation after a man was found with a severe head wound early Monday morning on Central.

Gilbert Gallegos, a spokesman with the Albuquerque Police Department, said the man “is not expected to survive his injuries.”

Officers were dispatched to 1100 Central SE, near Cedar, shortly after 3 a.m. after a man was found bleeding heavily from the back of the head. First responders initially suspected that the man had been shot, but Gallegos in an update said “it is unknown at this time how the injuries were sustained.”

He said the man was transferred to University of New Mexico Hospital’s trauma center.

“Homicide detectives are conducting preliminary interviews and canvassing of the area for additional witnesses and surveillance,” Gallegos said.

The incident prompted APD to shut down Central, between Oak and Spruce.
