Cox, Tian lead way at Junior Stableford Championship

High school individual state golf champions Grady Cox and Karen Tian each won a Sun Country Junior Stableford Championship division title Tuesday at Santa Fe Country Club.

Belen’s Cox, who won the Class 4A boys individual championship at Ladera Golf Course last month, captured the boys’ 16-18 division title after his 186 total score that included 94 in the first round and 92 in Tuesday’s second round. Clark Sonnenberg of Albuquerque Academy finished as the runner-up, seven points behind Cox.

Santa Fe Prep’s Tian, the Class 1A-3A girls individual champion, won the girls’ 16-18 division title with scores of 83 and 85. Sarah Grenemyer of La Cueva was the runner-up, three points behind Tian. Eli Salazar, a Santa Fe resident, won the boys 12-15 division title at 170, eight points ahead of Kirin Hochenedel, an Albuquerque resident.

Amara Montoya of Jarales won the girls 13-15 title at 123 and Lauren Martinez-Sandoval of Santa Fe was the runner-up with 71 points.
