Sheriff: 1 found dead in U-Haul smuggling migrants

Authorities say a U-Haul pulled over Thursday on U.S. 54, south of Carrizozo, was carrying more than 10 people in the country illegally, including one who didn’t survive.

Lincoln County Sheriff Michael Wood said emergency personnel tried to resuscitate the individual but were unsuccessful.

He called it a “tragic situation” on social media, noting that the incident had drawn a “heavy emergency personnel and vehicle presence on the highway.”
