Belen golfer Cox just keeps on winning

Grady Cox, who will be a sophomore at Belen High in the fall, is on quite the run recently in golf.

He won the New Mexico-West Texas Junior Amateur by three strokes at Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe Golf Course on Wednesday.

Last week, he captured a Sun Country Junior Stableford Championship division title at Santa Fe Country Club for the second straight year, as he won the boys’ age 16-18 division title. He was the boys’ 13-15 division champion last year.

Last month, Cox won the Class 4A boys individual championship at Ladera Golf Course.

Cox shot 6-under par 66 in the first round of the New Mexico-West Texas Junior Am on Tuesday and took a five-shot lead into the second round. He then shot 4-under to finish at 10-under 134 for the tournament.

Anthony Lara, of Anthony, Texas, finished as the runner-up at 7-under 137 (72-65), and Skyler Woods, who will be a sophomore at Kirtland Central, was third at 1-over 145 (71-74).

Avery Sky, who will be a junior at Rio Rancho, won the girls NM-WT Junior Am championship by one stroke. Sky shot 72-70, 2-under 142, and Karen Tian, an incoming junior at Santa Fe, shot 73-70, 1-under 143. Tian won the Class 1A-3A girls individual championship last month.
