Natalia Chavez, the Volcano Vista High standout whose half-court shot at the overtime buzzer gave the girls basketball team the Class 5A state championship in May, has committed to play for the University of New Mexico in 2022, she announced on Twitter Saturday night.
Chavez, a 5-foot-9 guard who will be a senior at Volcano Vista in the fall, thanked family, friends and teammates in her post that began with: DREAMS DO COME TRUE! #Committed
Her game-winning shot was ranked No. 2 on ESPN’s daily top-10 list, and it gave the Hawks a 52-49 victory over Hobbs at the Pit.
She joins her Volcano teammate Jaelyn Bates as a UNM commit. They both received scholarship offers from UNM as freshmen.
