Garrett Gouldsmith, a former University of New Mexico and Rio Rancho High baseball player, died Sunday after drowning at Donner Lake in northeast California, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and media reports.
He was 22.
Specifics on the drowning have not been released, the Reno Gazette Journal reported.
Gouldsmith played for Rio Rancho his junior and senior seasons after his father, Buddy, got an assistant job with the Lobos. At Rio Rancho, Gouldsmith was a Collegiate Baseball and Perfect Game All-American in 2017.
Gouldsmith began his college career with the Lobos in 2018. He transferred to Washington State for the 2019 season.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Lobo Garrett Gouldsmith (2018), who passed away unexpectedly this weekend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to former Lobo assistant Buddy Gouldsmith and the entire family during this difficult time,” the Lobos wrote on their baseball Twitter handle.
