The New Mexico State Film Office announced Tuesday that AMC is in production on “Dark Winds” – the network’s latest series with a strong New Mexico connection.

AMC is also home to “Better Call Saul,” “Preacher” and “Breaking Bad.”

“Dark Winds” is based on the Leaphorn and Chee mystery novels by Tony Hillerman.

New Mexico residents George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford are executive producing, and Chris Eyre is directing the pilot and executive producing.

According to a Film Office news release, the series follows the two Navajo police officers as their search for clues in a grisly double-murder case leads them deeper into the mysticism of Navajo spirituality and closer to the sins of their past.

The series stars Zahn McClarnon, Noah Emmerich and Kiowa Gordon.

The production is filming in Santa Fe, but will have locations in Española, Cochiti Pueblo, Tesuque Pueblo and the Navajo Nation. It will film through November.

bright spot“We thank New Mexico and the Navajo Nation for welcoming us so graciously,” Eyre said in the release. “There is no better community or location that could properly serve the authentic storytelling, look, and feel necessary for ‘Dark Winds.’ This was our first and only choice, and we’re overwhelmed with the abundance of phenomenal talent and crew we are able to work alongside here.”

The six-episode series is set to premiere on AMC+ and AMC in 2022.

According to the film office, the production will employ approximately 200 New Mexico crew members and more than 275 New Mexico background and extras.

“We are ecstatic that AMC is being so intentional about telling this story in an authentic way by creative talent whose work speaks for itself, with a Native American director from New Mexico, as well as Native American writers, actors, and locations,” Amber Dodson, New Mexico Film Office director, said in the announcement. ” ‘Dark Winds’ is a series that must be made in New Mexico.”
