Prep football: This week’s games to watch, predictions

1. Eldorado (2-0) at Rio Rancho (1-0), 7 p.m. Friday: Eagles collected an important overtime road victory at Mayfield last Saturday night, but Eldorado is stepping up a class as it takes on a Rio Rancho team that in its opener hammered La Cueva 50-0 last week. Eldorado’s veteran linebacking unit has its work cut out for it in this one dealing with the Rams’ backfield, and that large Rio Rancho O-Line. THE PICK: RIO RANCHO

2. Hope Christian (1-1) at ABQ Academy (2-0), 11 a.m. Saturday: I rarely feature the Chargers in our Top 5, but this game is completely worthy of such merit this week, as the Chargers — who have played just under four quarters total in two lopsided victories — play host to the Huskies, coming off a loss to Bloomfield. How serious a challenger is Academy in Class 4A? We’ll know more by lunchtime Saturday. I’m giving a slight edge to the Chargers. THE PICK: ACADEMY

3. La Cueva (1-1) at Las Cruces (1-1), 1 p.m. Saturday, Field of Dreams: This a difficult game to gauge, if only because of how badly things went for the Bears last week against Rio Rancho. Let’s see. La Cueva beat Cibola, Cibola beat Las Cruces … so, La Cueva has to be the pick, yes? I’m 0-2 on Bears games, for whatever that is worth. THE PICK: LAS CRUCES

4. St. Michael’s (2-0) at Santa Fe (2-0), 7 p.m. Friday: There are a few close-quarters rivalry games on the Week 3 schedule, including Cobre-Silver and Miyamura-Gallup. And this one, which features an extremely rare appearance (perhaps even a debut?) in my Top 5 games of the week feature by the Demons. On paper, this is a 6A program against a 3A program, but in actuality, this strikes me as a fairly competitive matchup. THE PICK: SANTA FE

5, Bloomfield (2-0) at Grants (1-1), 7 p.m. Friday: Love this 4A pairing. Was impressed with Bobcats’ Ryan Sharpe last week, and this is a nice dual-threat quarterback. Bloomfield’s size gave Hope Christian some issues last week, but the Bobcats scored 36 points — with SIX turnovers — in that win over the Huskies. THE PICK: BLOOMFIELD
