Police say a man was shot and killed Monday evening in Northwest Albuquerque, apparently by a store employee whom the victim had just tried to rob.

Daren DeAguero, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesman, said dispatch received several calls at about 5:45 p.m. about a man lying on the sidewalk near Fifth and Bellrose Avenue.

“The callers indicated the male appeared to have been shot,” DeAguero said. He said that when officers got to the scene, they found the man who had been shot. He died at the scene.

“At the same time this incident was occurring, dispatch received a call from a Tobacco Town employee,” DeAguero added. “The employee advised a male subject entered the store and attempted to rob him.”

According to DeAguero, the employee reported that he shot the would-be robber as he ran out of the store.

APD’s homicide unit is investigating the shooting.
