ABQ-area crashes kill two motorcyclists

Two motorcycle drivers were killed in separate wrecks in the Albuquerque area since Sunday, according to law enforcement agencies.

The first was killed when a motorcycle T-boned a sedan at Lomas and Louisiana NE on Sunday evening, according to a news release from the Albuquerque Police Department.

Investigators determined the motorcyclist was driving west on Lomas when the sedan, coming from the opposite direction, made a left turn to head north on Louisiana and crossed in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle driver, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the impact and suffered “significant injuries.” He was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital in critical condition and died.

The driver of the sedan remained on the scene. Police don’t believe alcohol was involved, but wrote that the speed of the motorcycle and improper driving were factors in the accident.

APD did not release the name of the person who died.

Several hours later on the West Side, three motorcycles were involved in a wreck that left one driver dead, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Joseph Montiel, a spokesman for the office, said the wreck occurred before 2:45 a.m. Monday near Dennis Chavez and Atrisco Vista.

The other two drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Montiel said he didn’t have information about the identity of the person who died.

Investigators don’t plan to file any charges in connection with the fatality. That driver’s inability or inexperience is a suspected factor in the wreck, Montiel said.

One of the two surviving drivers is suspected of driving while intoxicated, but Montiel said that doesn’t appear to be part of the cause of the crash.
