Challenge Cup pits father vs. son
The annual Challenge Cup takes place Monday at the Santa Fe Country Club. It matches the Sun Country Golf Association’s top pros against its top amateurs in a format similar to the Ryder Cup.
The most intriguing individual match is between the El Paso duo of Mark and Jere Pelletier. Mark, a former Sandia High and University of New Mexico player, is the director of golf at El Paso Country Club. Jere is his son.
Jere won the New Mexico-West Texas Amateur Championship earlier this summer, a title Mark won twice in his amateur days. They are the only father-son combination to win the event.
• Sandia Golf Club has continued its Twilight Rates summer special through August. From Monday-Thursday, play at the twilight rate of $46.00 starting at 1 p.m. The fee includes greens fees, cart and range balls.
• The first- and second-place finishers in the Desert Greens Ladies 18-hole “Ace Day Play” from Tuesday: first flight, Judith Jones, Juanita Frongillo; second, Rebecca Luco, Cathie Anderson; third, Helen Tricoglou, Sharen Sheehan. Ace (overall winner): Lorie Click
