Gov. Martinez to unveil river protection plan

BERNALILLO (AP) — Gov. Susana Martinez is expected to announce a plan to protect the state’s rivers and watersheds amid extreme drought, recent wildfires and monsoons.

Martinez is slated to unveil her proposal about the New Mexico River Stewardship Program at the Coronado State Historic Site in Bernalillo today. She is expected to announce the formation of the “River Stewards Initiative” to protect rivers and watersheds.

Extreme drought conditions in much of New Mexico make it one of the driest areas in the country.

Recent wildfires also have increased fears of mudslides and flash flooding around the state during monsoon season.
