CATCHES OF THE WEEK

Dmitri Hewitt, 6, and his dad, both of Las Cruces, each caught their limits of trout at Alto Lake using salmon eggs and worms April 8.

Jacob Garcia of Silver City caught a 24.5-inch, 12.4-pound largemouth bass at Bill Evans Lake using a homemade drop shot soft plastic crawdad pattern bait April 1.

John Falcon of Las Cruces caught a 4.16-pound largemouth bass at Elephant Butte Lake using an Old Trapper Beef Stick on April 3.

Joseph Uresti of Bayard caught a 20-inch, 3-pound Gila trout on the Gila River using a small white crappie jig near the Catwalk on April 4.

Maribel Romero, 8, of Santa Rosa caught a 24-inch rainbow trout at the Kids Pond at Santa Rosa Fish Hatchery using PowerBait on April 5.

Shawn and Melanie Trujillo of Santa Fe caught their limit of rainbow trout ranging in size from 13-17 inches at Morphy Lake using gold and silver spinners, and worms under a bobber April 9.

On the Pecos River, Jordan and Joeziah Archibeque, 9 and 11, of Carlsbad caught their limits of rainbow trout using bright green PowerBait on April 2. … Joaquin Lucero of Santa Fe caught an 18-inch rainbow trout using PowerBait on March 26.

Athena Rose, 3, of Rio Rancho caught her very first fish, a 12-inch rainbow trout, at Red River Hatchery using salmon eggs April 8.

Westin Randall, 10, of Aztec caught a 20.5-inch, 3.02-pound rainbow trout at Riverside Park Pond (Aztec Pond #1) using a green and black Rooster Tail spinner April 10.

On the San Juan River, Chuck Lees of Rio Rancho caught a 30-inch brown trout using an olive leech pattern fly in the Texas Hole on April 3. … Scott Sheward of Midland, Texas, caught and released a 23-inch rainbow trout using a size 24 Yong Flasher midge emerger March 23.

Lucas McClellan and Vivienne Cranor, age 4, of Phoenix caught their limits of rainbow trout at the Seven Springs Brood Pond using salmon eggs April 2.

Rhys Jaramillo, 7, of Las Cruces caught a 13-inch rainbow trout at the Timberon Ponds using pink PowerBait on April 3.

At Ute Lake, Jim O’Conner of Amarillo, Texas, caught and released a 6.48-pound smallmouth bass using a jig with a curly tail grub April 7. … Joe Gomez of Clovis caught a 4.95-pound smallmouth bass in 5 feet of water using a spinnerbait April 3.

Northeast fishing report

Cabresto Lake had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for trout was fair to good at Charette Lakes using black and silver Joe’s Flies.

Streamflow on the Cimarron River near Cimarron on Monday morning was 27.4 cubic feet per second (cfs).

Fishing for trout was good at Clayton Lake using various PowerBaits and nightcrawler worms.

Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair to good at Conchas Lake using shallow diving jerkbaits. Fishing for walleye was fair using crankbaits and curly tail grubs. Fishing for white bass was good using Bomber and Rat-L-Trap crankbaits.

At Costilla Creek, the department is implementing the final phase of a project to expand Rio Grande cutthroat trout in 120 miles of the Costilla watershed in northern New Mexico. The final phase involves removal of fish within a designated area (Rio Costilla from Costilla Dam downstream to the Valle Vidal Boundary including all tributaries and Comanche Creek from the road culvert crossing on Forest Road 1950 downstream to its confluence with Rio Costilla and all tributaries) with a tentative restocking of Rio Grande cutthroat in spring 2023. Places to fish nearby include Costilla Creek below the fish barrier, Upper Comanche Creek, Shuree Ponds, Middle Ponil Creek, Upper Powderhouse Creek, Little Costilla Creek, Vidal Creek and McCrystal Creek. Please check the Department’s website for additional information on the project and to identify alternative angling opportunities in the interim.

Fishing for trout at Lake Alice was fair to good using corn.

Fishing for trout at Lake Maloya from the bank was good using salmon eggs and green PowerBait.

Los Pinos River had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13 had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for trout at Monastery Lake was fair to good using olive black Pistol Pete spinner flies.

Fishing for trout at Morphy Lake was good using gold and silver spinners and worms fished under a bobber.

Streamflow on the Pecos River near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 124 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using beadhead pheasant tail nymph flies, worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs.

Streamflow on the Red River below the hatchery Monday morning was 55.7 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good using green beadhead caddis nymph flies and salmon eggs.

Streamflow on the Rio Grande at the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday morning was 387 cfs. Fishing for trout was good using caddis dry flies.

Streamflow on the Rio Hondo on Monday morning near Valdez was 18.3 cfs.

Streamflow on the Rio Mora on Monday morning near Tererro was not measured due to ice.

Streamflow on the Rio Pueblo near Peñasco on Monday morning was 45.2 cfs

Fishing for trout at the Santa Cruz Reservoir was good using garlic PowerBait and Rapala Countdown lures.

Shuree Ponds are closed for the season and will reopen in July.

Springer Lake had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake had no reports from anglers this week.

Stubblefield Lake had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for walleye at Ute Lake was good using suspending jerkbaits and swimbaits in shallow water. Fishing for white bass was fair using spinners and Bomber crankbaits. Fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass was good using spinnerbaits, Berkley Generals, white curly tail grubs, jerkbaits and jigs with crawler trailers in shallow water. Fishing for crappie was fair using live minnows in 15 to 20 feet of water. The main lake water surface temperature was in the mid to upper 50s and the water clarity was clear.

Northwest fishing report

Abiquiú Lake had no reports from anglers this week.

Waterflow on the Animas River below Aztec on Monday morning was 487 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good using black spinners.

Albuquerque Area Drains had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for tiger muskie at Bluewater Lake was good using Whopper Ploppers, large spinners and swimbaits.

Brazos River had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes had no reports from anglers this week.

Monday-morning flows on the Chama River below El Vado and Abiquiú were 403 cfs and 346 cfs, respectively. Please remember, from the river-crossing bridge on U.S. Highway 84 at Abiquiú upstream 7 miles to the base of Abiquiú Dam is special trout waters with a bag limit of two trout only.

Fishing for pike at Cochiti Lake was good using small jerkbaits. Fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass was fair to good using crankbaits and jigs. Fishing for catfish was good using cut bait and nightcrawler worms.

El Vado Lake State Park is open for day use and can be accessed at the Main Park area, North El Vado Day Use Area off Hwy 95 and Hargroves Day Use Area off Highway 322.

Fishing for trout at Fenton Lake was good using prince nymph flies, beadhead nymph flies, worms and salmon eggs Please remember, only two cutthroat trout are allowed to be harvested per day within the regular five-fish limit.

Heron Lake is free of ice and open to bank fishing or fishing from paddle craft and small boats that can be launched from the shoreline.

At the Jemez Waters, streamflow on the Jemez near the village of Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 87.7 cfs. Fishing for trout was fair to good using worms.

Laguna del Campo is closed for the season and lake will reopen in May.

Lagunitas Lakes had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for trout at Lake Farmington was good using rainbow PowerBait.

Due to extremely low water levels and unstable ground conditions at McGaffey Lake, stocking efforts have been suspended. Lake conditions will be monitored and stockings will resume once conditions improve.

Fishing for pike at Navajo Lake was fair using jerkbaits. Fishing for trout was slow to fair using trout pattern lures. Fishing for smallmouth bass was fair using crankbaits and skirt jigs.

Rio Grande had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for trout at Riverside Park Pond (Aztec Pond #1) was good using green and black Rooster Tail spinners.

San Gregorio Lake had no reports from anglers this week.

Streamflow on the San Juan River on Monday morning was 320 cfs. The Bureau of Reclamation has scheduled an increase in the release from Navajo Dam from 300 cfs to 500 cfs for Tuesday, April 12. Fishing for trout in the quality waters was good using chocolate foam wing midge emerger flies and dry fly midge pattern flies. Fishing for trout in the bait waters was fair to good using garlic PowerBait and worms.

Fishing for trout at Seven Springs Brood Pond was good using gold beadhead nymph flies, black and orange leech pattern flies, pheasant tail nymph flies and salmon eggs.

Fishing for trout at Tingley Beach was good using salmon eggs and pink PowerBait.

Trout Lakes had no reports from anglers this week.

Fishing for trout at Alumni Pond was slow to fair using Velveeta Cheese. Fishing for largemouth bass was slow to fair using streamer flies. Fishing for catfish was slow to fair using worms.

Fishing for trout at Bear Canyon Lake was good using salmon eggs and yellow PowerBait.

Fishing for largemouth bass at Bill Evans Lake was fair to good using soft plastic crawdad pattern baits.

Fishing for catfish at Caballo Lake was fair using hot dogs and nightcrawler worms.

Fishing for catfish at Elephant Butte Lake was good using cut bait and nightcrawler worms. Fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass was fair to good using jigs and plastic crawdads. Fishing for white bass was fair to good using white Bombers, jointed Rapalas and Rat-L-Trap lures. Fishing for crappie was good using small jigs and live minnows. Fishing for walleye was slow using curly tail grubs.

Fishing for trout at Escondida Lake was good using PowerBait and worms.

Streamflow on the Gila River on Monday morning was 75.3 cfs. Fishing for trout on Whitewater Creek was fair to good using small white crappie jigs.
